THE STATE OF THE GENRE: The Monster Outside the Closet

In the letters column of the April 2009 issue of Rue Morgue magazine, a reader named Jerry Diego writes, "As a gay man who loves horror, I've rarely felt like the horror community embraces anything about us (other than killing us horribly in movies)...[yet] I know that not every horror fan is a single white male, testosterone-fuelled, T&A-loving homo-basher like every single forum of every horror site seems to suggest."As someone who used to frequent horror message boards before I realized...

Shadows & Light: Journeys with Outlaws in Revolutionary Hollywood illuminates the "reel" revolution that started in 1960 with the work of Director John Cassavetes. Designing SLIME CITY MASSACRE

The SLIME CITY MASSACRE Design GalleryWith less than a week of pre-propuction remaining before principal photography starts on SLIME CITY MASSACRE (yikes!), I thought I'd shine a spotlight on some of the other talented individuals working on this film. So far, I've concentrated on special effects and some members of the seven-man team realizing them, because I love monsters so much. Sometimes I have to tear myself away from Andrew Lavin's SFX lab to go hiome and do my producer's chores. Making...

Author Interview: Douglas E. Wright

So, Douglas E. Wright,...mind if I call you Dougie? No, I can tell by that mean look you'd rather I didn't. Okay. I'm ashamed to admit that upon first meeting you on the online message board The Haunt, I mistook you for Douglas Winter that wrote all those nonfiction books about Stephen King. Has that happened to you before? (Please say yes and save me from dying of embarrassment.) No. Not even my sister calls me Dougie. As for the Douglas Winter comment. Another great big, NO! LOL No, I...

Our newest title Doppelgänger by Byron Starr will be available in the next 2 weeks. “Vivid and suspenseful, this is a great take on the classic tale of a monster terrorizing a small town. The Strange Dr. Weird

The Strange Dr. Weird is a radio program broadcast on Mutual from 1944 to 1945. Sponsored by Adams Hats, the drama is notable in part because it was a sister series to The Mysterious Travel, both in theme and its narrator.   Maurice Tarplin, who was also the creepy voice of The Mysterious Traveler. A Time To...Volume 3

I just noticed today that the anthology A Time To...Volume 3: The Best of The Lorelei Signal 2008 is now out, and available for purchase HERE. It contains, among other works by various poets and writers, my rather dark fantasy poem "Sorceress Devolution". Written in almost a chant-like manner, "Sorceress Devolution" evolved from a we… Continue

A Sense of Mounting Excitement

The prospect of the paperback release of 'Legacy of the Ripper', the sequel to 'A Study in Red' came a step closer yesterday, when my publisher contacted me to inform me that the files had been sent to the printers, and that all we have to do now is wait, and keep an eye on Amazon on a daily basis as the book will appear as soon as the printers can get it out and on to the Amazon database. I just love the cover that Deron Douglas at Double Dragon Publishing has produced for the book and can't wa… Continue

Niteblade Art Blog: Pencilled Mayhem II

In the latest installment of the Niteblade art blog, "Pencilled Mayhem II", I once again feature pencil creations by the fantasy artist Shane Lees. This time around, Shane has sent me some works with a surreal bent. I find his "Astral Jellyfish" and "Spider Eye" especially appealing from a compositional perspective. And you simply must check out the detail in the dragon in Shane's "Moment of Decision". He did an amaz… Continue

Poem Accepted for Publication in THE MONSTERS NEXT DOOR #8

My dark poem "Visages of Betrayal and Madness" has been accepted for publication in Issue 8 of The Monsters Next Door. This time, I describe a man's descent into murderous madness, triggered by the painful betrayals of the human monsters in his life. All I had to do was draw on my own personal pain, and let my warped creativity do the rest! (Yes, I do tend to dip into that particular creative fount quite a bit.)

"Yellow Eyes" in EVERY DAY POETS

My cinquain "Yellow Eyes" now appears on-line at Every Day Poets. Please check it out, perhaps leave a comment, and maybe rate it as well. Thanks!

Although I was inspired to write this poem after reading a story about a ghost cat, I deliberately left the potentially supernatural nature of the piece ambiguous. It may be a speculative cinquain… Continue

2009 Locus Award Winners

The Locus Awards are presented to winners of Locus Magazine’s annual readers’ poll, which was established in the early ’70s specifically to provide recommendations and suggestions to Hugo Awards voters. Over the decades the Locus Awards have often drawn more voters than the Hugos and Nebulas combined. In recent years Locus Awards are presented at [...]

Storytellers Unplugged

Boohoo: My Life as a Ghost

A recent column by Wayne Allen Sallee used the G word – ghostwriting. It took me many years of writing before I figured out how to make a living from our craft – all you need do is write the words of people that can afford to employ you as a hired gun (writer). Oh, [...]

Whether Workshops

It’s a crazy world, writing workshops.  An industry of hope.  Not without precedence - nobody thinks twice about music school.  Dance school.  Art studios.  So why shouldn’t there be writing workshops?  I’ve mentioned some of my workshop experiences in past entries - ranging from academic  classes in college to evening adult-type classes at the New School [...]

Steve & Melanie Tem: HOW MUCH DO YOU NEED TO START?

Steve: So how much do you need to have in place before you start a piece of fiction? I’m mostly talking about short stories here, since I presume that before you begin a novel you’re going to want to have a pretty clear idea of what it’s about, who the characters are, and in [...]

I AM NOT LOOKING FOR ME

Why do people treat books as mirrors? I recently came across a post by Elizabeth Bluemle at the Publisher’s Weekly site entitled “The New Literal Mind” (link to the full post, and comments that follow, given at the foot of this essay). Elizabeth writes, amongst other things: “I’ve noticed a strange trend among grandparents these [...]
