Marketer/Sales Person Wanted

I am the one sole person behind every facet of Battered Spleen Productions. That means I handle the marketing, sales, public relations, and all of the business end as well as writing, coding, and art. I cannot say that I am very good at the marketing and such. I've written press releases, used Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, and a bunch of other assorted social networks. I haven't had a lot of time to do it. As such I'm maybe not the best person to judge how skilled I am or am not in those endeavour… Continue

The Haunted Isle

The Haunted Isle

I lie beyond the narrow sandy strand,
A jagged mote upon the horizon,
A rugged speck upon the ocean.
Sailors skirt past my flanks in morbid dread.
My dark hollows house the unshriven dead.

I lie amongst the angry, swelling waves.
Churning foam obscures my treacherous shoals,
Doom for innumerable imperilled souls.
Wretched spir… Continue

Malevolent Magazines Live

The first issue of Killing Time Horror E-Rag(TM) is available now in the Battered Spleen Productions(TM) Store. ( http://tinyurl.com/yhwoocu ) Please check it out and pass the word. Thank you.

Creating PDFs is not as easy a task as might be imagined. This is especially true when using new software. I created this issue by laying out pages in HTML and then printing them to PDF. Then with each page created I assembled them in some PDF software, added links… Continue

"The Sheerie" in APHELION

My speculative cinquain "The Sheerie" has been published in the November 2009 issue of the web-zine Aphelion. Check it out!

In case anyone was wondering, I once again dip into the well of fairy folklore for inspiration. More specifically, I again delve into the connections between the realm of fairy and the realm of the dead… Continue

Why Lovecraft?

Welcome back after the break for all of the Hallowe'en madness. I have one more guest blogger for you, Stewart Sternberg. When I set out the call for guest bloggers Stewart was the one person I did not know already. I looked over his blog and immediately decided I had to have an article from him. He asked me what I would like to see and based on his recent blog entires I said something on Lovecraft or making a mythos would be great. This is it and I won't hold you up any more.

Why Lovecraft? by… Continue

"weeping tree" in SCIFAIKUEST

My horrorku "weeping tree" has been published in the on-line version of Scifaikuest. Check it out! (THIS should take you right to the horrorku page. Just scroll down the page to find my contribution.)

"Weeping tree" combines the concept of a weeping willow with the potentially dangerous, and possibly even murderous, a… Continue

Why Monsters?

Talking about monsters seems to be appropriate this time of year. So, why do certain people (like me) write about monsters, read about monsters, draw monsters, watch monster movies, and just tend to find great fascination in all things monstrous? Is it creepy? Is it abnormal? Or is it just good, clean fun?

At times, I like to think of drawing monsters and writing about monsters as a bit of monster-slaying, creating diabolic beasts on paper to vanquish the demons in my past. And there are plenty… Continue

This Halloween, for a different kind of treat, visit the House of Chamberlin. Open its heavy oaken doors, step through its dark stone threshold, and prowl its eerie halls. Spy strange, wondrous, fantastic, and frightful scenes. Meet lusty vampires, hungry werewolves, macabre musicians, and deadly dragons. Greg Schwartz's Article About Horrorku

Greg Schwartz, a fellow poet and composer of haiku both light and dark, penned a very interesting article about horrorku entitled "Trick or Treat: Haiku and Its Place in Dark Poetry". I strongly suggest checking it out (and not just because I'm mentioned in there alongside the likes of Josh Gage, Aurelio Rico Lopez III, and Deborah Kolodji). All fans of dark poetry, and all dark poe… Continue

Famous Monsters Of Filmland Returns To Print

Famous Monsters of Filmland, the classic sci-fi/horror/fantasy-specific film magazine that captured the imaginations of so many for more than three decades, today announced its return to print.

Resurrection House – Book Review

The eight reprinted and two new stories in Resurrection House horrifically reflect reminders of the fragility of being human.

Ron Breznay’s Old Masters of Horror: Charles Dickens

For many people, Christmas isn’t complete without Charles Dickens’s “A Christmas Carol” – whether they read the story, go to the local theater to see a stage production, or watch one of the many movie versions.

Storytellers Unplugged

One more Q&A

In January, I’ll be back to trying to think of my own content again, but here’s December’s Q&A:

Q: How about the writing lessons you’ve learned along the way? Anything from outlining to editing your own work.

Try to write every day.

Take notes. No matter how certain you are that you could never possibly forget the incredibly [...]

Okay, I am actually quite afraid

So I know the last time I blogged here, I proudly proclaimed I had no fear. Well. That was specific to the new publishing wilderness. I have tons of fear. I’m full of the stuff.

A nasty farmer inside me plants festering seeds that grow with my insecurities to fertilize. What if this story sucks? What if [...]

Dream Versus Time, Life, the World, And All The Really Important Things

The holidays are coming.  We’re arriving at an intersection of worlds – the real and the imagined, outer and inner, concrete and symbolic, the past and the now.

What must be done, what needs to be done.

Kids dressed up as monsters expect candy offerings.  Blood-bonded friends and enemies gather for the ritual slaughter [...]

Secret Agent Man

Secret agent man, secret agent man,

They’ve given you a number and taken away your name.

Show of hands:  how many of you are happy with your literary agent?  My guess is that probably fewer than half of you are raising your hands.  In my writing life I have had three agents.  When I was with agent [...]

Three Editing Tips

So the first draft is finished, and now you have to edit the sonofabitch.

Most writers don’t particularly enjoy the task of rewriting/editing, but I do. Not sure why, but I find it sometimes more rewarding than the initial writing.

Now, for me, the best way [...]
