Well I sat down with my parents and flat out told the truth.

When I grow up I want to be Bret Jordan.

Man this is so Twilight Zone...

Are you Bret Jordan or Bret Jordan?

And if you started off drawing Peanuts characters can you finally explain to me how Linus got the huge dent in his head? None of the other characters have it. It's like this unsolved mystery that has plagued me since childhood.

Ohhh, 'plagued'...almost like an intentional plug...

Bret, if you haven't seen The Ruins, do so ASAP! One of the most disturbing movies I've seen in a long while.

The Mist is my fav King story adapted to the screen. I wish Durabont (SP?) would redo IT.

I once read The Shining, and then saw the movie. It fell sooo short of the book, it's scared me away from reading King novels because I'll inevitably want to see the movie. And I've heard that's true of more than one of his books. far better in print than on the screen.

My favorite King movie...? Firestarter. And I haven't seen that since I was a teenager. Back then I had it copied on VHS, so I watched it a lot. Like Carrie, but a younger girl without the pig's blood.

No doubt. That's what I was saying. I thought maybe I was having one of those blond moments I've heard about.

It's great to see you again, as always, mi compadre!

Vidor, Texas
About Me:
Bret Jordan is a resident of Southeast Texas. He began to draw at an early age, starting with the Peanuts characters. As he grew older his drawings turned to fantasy illustrations, mostly made for his Dungeons & Dragons adventures. After graduating high school Bret went on to Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas majoring in Graphic Design. This lasted for several years until responsibilities, life, and the desire to do something besides study called him away. It was at this point that he maried his wife, Angela and began working as an instrument technician for the local refineries. Life carried on and over time Bret and his wife had three children, all girls. By this time Bret was programming computers and doing fantasy illustrations for a UK based RPG company by the name of Mongoose Publishing. When the fourth child arrived time was short and Bret had to quit the illustration business and just concentrate on family and his day job.

In 2006 Bret got into the illustration business again, in a field he had never thought of before, small press horror. His first illustrations were for Permuted Press' upcoming anthologies The Undead: Skin and Bones and The Undead: Flesh Feast. In the midst of drawing for Permuted Press Bret decided that he would try his hand at some more fantasy illustrations and got some work from Hero Games.

At this point not only did Bret resume his drawings but he also tried something that he had always wanted to do, but never thought he could, writing. He submitted a story to Dead Pages Press for the anthology Fried! Fast Food, Slow Deaths (now handled by Graveside Tales). The story was accepted and he also got his first cover gig for that book. The story acceptance gave Bret the confidence to write more stories. Since then Bret has had two other stories accepted by Twisted Dreams Magazine.

Soon after that the work began to roll in. Bret has done three chapbook covers for Rainfall Records and Books, and a chapbook cover for Baysgarth Publishing.

As the covers were wrapped up on the Rainfall projects Dale Murphy contacted Bret about possibly doing some artwork for Graveside Tales. This led to one of the most rewarding things Bret has been involved with so far, being part of book publishing.

The best thing that came of all the drawings, writing, and small press involvement was the friends that Bret has made along the way, and seeing everyone helping everyone else as each and every one of the authors and artists travel into new territory.

Storytellers Unplugged

What I Learned From Blogging About the Kindle

Last month, when I finally decided to “come out” about owning a Kindle, I learned two things. One, after reading some of the comments about my blog entry, I realized that I have always written about “safe” topics, ones that are least likely to stir up controversy, and heaven forbid, make [...]

Let’s Just Pretend The Last 8 Months Never Happened

Looks like it was a sabbatical after all.

Last March, after close to a three-year tenure, I hung up my Storytellers U hat — the one with the Viking horns and a beer funnel — without knowing whether this would be permanent or temporary. Couldn’t help but notice, in the interim, that lords-of-the-manor [...]

AND NOW, OUR … LOSER!

The Chicago Tribune ran “The Great Chicago Ghost Story” contest for Halloween.

The rules: A Chicago site must be mentioned in the story. No more than 750 words.

I wrote a story. Entered.

Lost.

Here’s the loser.

THE GHOSTS OF CHICAGO, I SET THEM FREE

Q&A the Second

Q: How does it feel to walk away? You’ve just complete a ginormous four book cycle (well, you finished it a while ago). Is it refreshing to turn back to other things, or do you light-headed?

A: The answer, of course, is yes. I am tremendously grateful to be done with the Doctrine of Labyrinths, but [...]

When I Wish I Wasn’t a Writer

When people ask me what I do for a living, I am always at a bit of a loss as to how to answer.  It sounds a little too highfaluting to announce, “I am an author.”  You just can’t say that sentence without sounding like you graduated from Oxford, or that you [...]
