Dark Speculative Poet and Artist

Profile Information

Hometown:
A cursed place better left unnamed.
About Me:
Who am I? What am I? Well, I guess I'm a dark speculative poet, writer, and artist. I'm also someone with a deep interest in history, myth, legend, folklore, and the unexplained. Let's just say, based on my own personal experiences, I'm a believer in the paranormal.

My poetic and artistic works have appeared in quite a few on-line and print publications, including Niteblade, The Sword Review, Hungur, The Fifth Di..., Sounds of the Night, Aphelion, Bewildering Stories, and Sorcerous Signals. I'm also something of a regular illustrator at the sword and sorcery publication Flashing Swords.

A Time To...Volume 3

I just noticed today that the anthology A Time To...Volume 3: The Best of The Lorelei Signal 2008 is now out, and available for purchase HERE. It contains, among other works by various poets and writers, my rather dark fantasy poem "Sorceress Devolution". Written in almost a chant-like manner, "Sorceress Devolution" evolved from a we… Continue

Abandoned Towers Issue #3

Abandoned Towers Issue #3 is now out. And my art is on the cover! Not to mention, my illustrations "Memories of Camelot" and "The Armour of Loki" accompany Bradley H. Sinor's story "And the Wind Sang". And my cover art also appears inside as a colouring page.

The print version of Abandoned Towers is available for purchase HERE.

Wondrous Web Worlds Vol. 8

The Sam's Dot Publishing anthology Wondrous Web Worlds Volume 8 is now available for purchase at The Genre Mall. It contains, among other works by a variety of speculative writers and poets, my dark science fiction poem "Explorers". While this particular piece was not my first zine publication (that distinction goes to "Midnight Sabbath", which appeared in DemonMinds in April 2007), it does happen to be my very f… Continue

Niteblade Art Blog: Pencilled Mayhem II

In the latest installment of the Niteblade art blog, "Pencilled Mayhem II", I once again feature pencil creations by the fantasy artist Shane Lees. This time around, Shane has sent me some works with a surreal bent. I find his "Astral Jellyfish" and "Spider Eye" especially appealing from a compositional perspective. And you simply must check out the detail in the dragon in Shane's "Moment of Decision". He did an amaz… Continue

Poem Accepted for Publication in THE MONSTERS NEXT DOOR #8

My dark poem "Visages of Betrayal and Madness" has been accepted for publication in Issue 8 of The Monsters Next Door. This time, I describe a man's descent into murderous madness, triggered by the painful betrayals of the human monsters in his life. All I had to do was draw on my own personal pain, and let my warped creativity do the rest! (Yes, I do tend to dip into that particular creative fount quite a bit.)

Hi Richard,

good to hear that your creative side are flourishing! You are one hell of a poet and artist, so that is really good to hear.

Now, cars are nothing but evil pieces of metal. My own car his hanging on for dear life and I am happy every time the damn thing goes where it is supposed to. I don't know the first thing about cars or machines. They are considering on creating a new law here in Sweden that will ban me from ALL kinds of tools and machinery for all eternity. I hope they do! When my girlfriend asks me to look at the car I understand what Jerry Seinfeld meant when he said: Well, you open the hood and hope that there will be a huge switch set to OFF!

And as you said: sometimes it just one small thing that can make all the difference.

Also, I would like to thank you for the very useful pointers you have given me. They have helped me a lot. Thanks a million!

By the way, have you tried out scribd?

Yours truly
Thom

You're a brave man. It's one thing to hear about the GST site here, rumors abound...but it's another to actually take that first step.

I hope you brought water, a flare gun and extra underwear.

John R. Little’s The Gray Zone

Bad Moon Books has announced the August release of John R. Little’s The Gray Zone. Description: In 1984, Henry Davidson took the holiday of a lifetime, spending his summer in Aswan, Egypt. The trip changed his life in many ways, but when he swallowed a secret powder handed down from generation to generation, the biggest [...]

2009 Locus Award Winners

The Locus Awards are presented to winners of Locus Magazine’s annual readers’ poll, which was established in the early ’70s specifically to provide recommendations and suggestions to Hugo Awards voters. Over the decades the Locus Awards have often drawn more voters than the Hugos and Nebulas combined. In recent years Locus Awards are presented at [...]

Derek Gunn’s The Estuary Released

Irish writer, Derek Gunn’s latest thriller, The Estuary, has been released by Permuted Press. According to the author, The Estuary is a fast-paced, horror adventure tale, about a desperate plan formulated in the darkest years of an evil empire, which now threatens to engulf the residents of a small community in Southern Ireland. “I’m delighted that [...]

Storytellers Unplugged

Boohoo: My Life as a Ghost

A recent column by Wayne Allen Sallee used the G word – ghostwriting. It took me many years of writing before I figured out how to make a living from our craft – all you need do is write the words of people that can afford to employ you as a hired gun (writer). Oh, [...]

Whether Workshops

It’s a crazy world, writing workshops.  An industry of hope.  Not without precedence - nobody thinks twice about music school.  Dance school.  Art studios.  So why shouldn’t there be writing workshops?  I’ve mentioned some of my workshop experiences in past entries - ranging from academic  classes in college to evening adult-type classes at the New School [...]

Steve & Melanie Tem: HOW MUCH DO YOU NEED TO START?

Steve: So how much do you need to have in place before you start a piece of fiction? I’m mostly talking about short stories here, since I presume that before you begin a novel you’re going to want to have a pretty clear idea of what it’s about, who the characters are, and in [...]

Collecting Characters on the Road

My son and I are in Baltimore as I write this.  I set up a new office for my company here a while back, and since we just managed to get it connected to the corporate network, I’m here to iron out the kinks and get things running smoothly.  Bill is in training to do [...]

I AM NOT LOOKING FOR ME

Why do people treat books as mirrors? I recently came across a post by Elizabeth Bluemle at the Publisher’s Weekly site entitled “The New Literal Mind” (link to the full post, and comments that follow, given at the foot of this essay). Elizabeth writes, amongst other things: “I’ve noticed a strange trend among grandparents these [...]
