"The Sheerie" in APHELION

My speculative cinquain "The Sheerie" has been published in the November 2009 issue of the web-zine Aphelion. Check it out! In case anyone was wondering, I once again dip into the well of fairy folklore for inspiration. More specifically, I again delve into the connections between the realm of fairy and the realm of the dead… Continue

My horrorku "weeping tree" has been published in the on-line version of Scifaikuest. Check it out! (THIS should take you right to the horrorku page. Just scroll down the page to find my contribution.) "Weeping tree" combines the concept of a weeping willow with the potentially dangerous, and possibly even murderous, a… Continue

Why Monsters?

Talking about monsters seems to be appropriate this time of year. So, why do certain people (like me) write about monsters, read about monsters, draw monsters, watch monster movies, and just tend to find great fascination in all things monstrous? Is it creepy? Is it abnormal? Or is it just good, clean fun? At times, I like to think of drawing monsters and writing about monsters as a bit of monster-slaying, creating diabolic beasts on paper to vanquish the demons in my past. And there are plenty… Continue

Spy strange, wondrous, fantastic, and frightful scenes. Meet lusty vampires, hungry werewolves, macabre musicians, and deadly dragons. Check out examples of Ric Chamberlin's artwork in the latest Niteblade Art Blog entry, "House of Chamberlin". Ch… Continue

Greg Schwartz's Article About Horrorku

Greg Schwartz, a fellow poet and composer of haiku both light and dark, penned a very interesting article about horrorku entitled "Trick or Treat: Haiku and Its Place in Dark Poetry". I strongly suggest checking it out (and not just because I'm mentioned in there alongside the likes of Josh Gage, Aurelio Rico Lopez III, and Deborah Kolodji). All fans of dark poetry, and all dark poe… Continue

"Gathering of the Dead" in TALES FROM THE MOONLIT PATH

My dark speculative poem "Gathering of the Dead" has been published in the Halloween 2009 Issue of the dark and haunting e-zine Tales from the Moonlit Path. Check it out! Gathering of the Dead" combines two things near and dear to my heart - ghost stories and fairy folklore. The fairy connection may simply be implied through the mention of… Continue

Guest Blogger at LEARNING DARK ARTS

Today, I am a guest blogger over at Robert G. Male's blog Learning Dark Arts. Robert graciously asked if I could be a guest blogger sometime this month. He hoped I could come up with an entry discussing my personal creative process. Well, I did, resulting in "Traditional Meets Digital". If you want to le… Continue

"The Haunted Castle" at THE ABSENT WILLOW REVIEW

My dark speculative poem "The Haunted Castle" is now on-line at The Absent Willow Review. Check it out! In this poem, I combine my love of castles with my interest in things supernatural, something which I admit to doing once or twice before. And this time, the castle's ruinous state and the strange goings-on within are told from the perspec… Continue

"Coach-a-Bower" in APHELION

My horrorku "Coach-a-Bower" is now on-line in the October issue of Aphelion. Check it out! Although the kernel of inspiration for many of my works comes from conceptual seeds gleaned from various reading materials, once in a while something I see in a television program or in a movie sprouts into a usable concept. "Coach-a-Bower" act… Continue

The Banshee's Cry

The Banshee's Cry A fell keening echoes across the moor, Punctuated by the pealing thunder. Pouring rain lashes at the windowpane While argent cracks flash in the darkened sky, But the tumultuous storm cannot quell The ominous wailing of that fey hag. A figure wrapped in a funeral shroud… Continue

"Visages of Betrayal and Madness" in THE MONSTERS NEXT DOOR

My dark poem "Visages of Betrayal and Madness" has been published in Issue Eight of The Monsters Next Door, their very-first print issue. The poem can also be seen in the free pdf sneak-peek, but I suggest buying a print copy to help support the editor's efforts in making the switch from e-zine to print zine. Besides, reading something on the computer screen just isn't the same as reading something actually in print.… Continue

Niteblade Art Blog: Bloody Horror

In the latest installment of the Niteblade Art Blog, I feature the work of the accomplished horror artist Jerrod Brown. A traditional artist and a southpaw, Jerrod has been painting and drawing for nearly forty years. Who (or What) is it at the Door?

Who (or What) is it at the Door? by Richard H. Fay Key slides into keyhole Turning tumblers, But door never opens. Doorknob rattles Rotated by hand Not really there. Hinges creak And wood moans As no one enters. Widened eyes Peer through cracks, Seeing nothing. Door stays shut, Barring entrance To unseen things. Knock upon wood Quickens heartbeat And steals breath Because no mortal being Stands at the threshold Waiting to come in. Copyright © 2009 Richard H. Fay (Based on actual… Continue

Essay up at Creator and the Catalyst

My essay (or commentary, or editorial, or whatever you want to call it) "The Good and the Bad of Critiques" is now on-line at the Creator and the Catalyst web site. Check it out! In the piece, I voice my personal views regarding the relative importance of critiques to those receiving them (it is all relative, after all), and how some things passing for constructive… Continue

Pixies in the Porridge

vaporous sprites reel across steaming pot porridge burned This may be a speculative haiku, or it may not. Fairy lore can be like that at times; it may truly be something supernatural, or it may just use supernatural explanations for mundane happenings. Even though I was inspired to write this piece by an example of fairy art by Joyce Plumstead depicting ruined porridge (although I think it was a human boy who ruins the porridge in the story being illustrated), I could just as easily have been i… Continue

Roiling Gyre in APHELION

Will a gigantic cosmic whirlpool suck up the Earth at its aphelion? Or will the seas drain down a hole in the crust when the planet reaches its farthest distance from the Sun? Actually, no. My mythic scifaiku "roiling gyre" now appears on-line in the web-zine Aphelion. And I make no apologies for flexing my vocabulary muscles in this one, fitting a couple of interesting words into three little l… Continue

This is the Real Me

I feel like I had a virtual doppelganger of my own creation. Something happened with my password and signing in, and I ended up with a second presence on the Graveside Tales Network. This is the real me, right here, not that other one! I've now corrected the problem, hopefully, and deleted the other me. If only getting rid of a real doppelganger was that easy! Real doppelganger, you may ask? I guess having a virtual doppelganger was appropriate, since I seem to have a real one. My wife and dau… Continue

A new installment of the Niteblade art blog is now on-line here. "Electric Blue Sparks" in APHELION

My wizardly scifaiku "Electric Blue Sparks" now appears on-line in the July 2009 issue of the web-zine Aphelion. Check it out! While I think the description is quite clear, I believe I leave it up to the reader to fill in the details of what specific action is actually taking place. Am I describing a wizard's own spe… Continue

Storytellers Unplugged

The Anatomy and Creation of a Story Pt. 2

This is an ongoing discussion of the process I use to write short stories…not that there is a set process, as it’s different each time.  I started this in “Part One” back on my personal blog, and wanted to continue here to mix up the audience as much as possible.

In part one, I discussed the [...]

“This soap box is not big enough for the both of us.”

I asked readers for topics they would like to see me address in this blog, and I got a slew of great responses, something that will keep me in columns for a few months to come.

Here’s the question that got top billing for [...]

Providence, 1986

Providence, 1986 Wayne Allen Sallee 28 November 2009

I have a road trip, of sorts, ahead of me in a few hours. A zig-zag across the transit system of Chicago. I’m heading up north, but first I have to take the 55th Street bus to an artist friend’s place and drop off a few autographed books. There is [...]

The Ritual of Fine-Tuning My Writing

Most writers I know have rituals. These run the gamut from adjusting their desks a certain way to writing by candlelight to setting a glass of perfectly innocent booze on fire before each writing project as a sacrifice to the Writing Ancestors. They may sound silly, or wasteful (perfectly good booze, after all) or unintuitive, [...]

Thanksgiving

Friends and relatives around he world sing the same song: “We don’t have Thanksgiving here.” Here is New Zealand, South Africa, England, Israel…and on and on. This year, because we are down to three of us—my guardian angel/chef and one friend who lives alone—I stopped to think about what that means.

“We don’t have [...]
